sudan_goldAppelGlobal and Emerald Cooperative carried out a project January 2016 in cooperation with Ikabashi a local Sudanese company.

January 2016 a project was initiated in cooperation with Ikabashi a local Sudanese company and with Emerald Small Scale Multi-Purpose Cooperative of the Philippines. A small processing station was established in the outskirts of Khartoum. A group of about ten people were trained in mercury-free gold extraction. The processing station (see photo below) comprising milling facilities, a sluice and chute to produce heavy mineral concentrates was established just outside Khartoum. The concentrates were panned down to high gold contents, which were subsequently smelted using borax as a flux. The aim is to produce mercury-free processing stations for the many small-scale gold mining communities in Sudan.

In part of 2016 six Philippine small-scale miners were based in Sudan, where they taught local miners extracting gold without using mercury.
