In 2007 a fact finding mission in Malia was carried out in cooperation with Geological Survey of Mali. Presentations on mercury-free gold extraction were given at the Survey and at the Danish Embassy in Bamako. Project carried out under the auspices of Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS).

The Survey arrange field visit in Western Mali near the border to Senegal and Guinea where large small-scale gold mining communities were situated. Looking at the gold ores exploited it was obvious that the gold ores are amenable to mercury-free gold extraction. The most common gold extraction met was simple amalgamation, whereas whole ore amalgamation was only seen a few places.
